Genetic Counseling

RMCC offers a variety of genetic counseling services throughout its network.

Genetic counseling is a communication process dealing with the human problems associated with the occurrence, or risk of occurrence, of a genetic condition in a family, such as inherited forms of cancer. Individuals who seek genetic counseling services may have already been diagnosed with cancer or may have close relatives who have had a cancer diagnosis.

Genetic counselors help an individual or family:

Understand the medical facts. This includes the diagnosis, probable course of the condition and therapeutic alternatives.
Appreciate the way heredity contributes to cancer and its implications for other family members.
Understand the available alternatives for dealing with the risk of a recurrence of cancer.
Choose the course of action that is most appropriate to their situation in regards to family goals, ethics and religion.
Make the best possible adjustment to the presence of an inherited condition within a family member or self.
Seek appropriate medical and educational care.
