Genetic Counseling

RMCC offers a variety of genetic counseling services throughout its network.

Genetic counseling is a communication process dealing with the human problems associated with the occurrence, or risk of occurrence, of a genetic condition in a family, such as inherited forms of cancer.  Individuals who seek genetic counseling services may have already been diagnosed with cancer or may have close relatives who have had a cancer diagnosis.

Genetic counselors help an individual or family:

  • Understand the medical facts. This includes the diagnosis, probable  course of the condition and therapeutic alternatives.
  • Appreciate the way heredity contributes to cancer and its implications for  other family members.
  • Understand the available alternatives for dealing with the risk of a  recurrence of cancer.
  • Choose the course of action that is most appropriate to their situation in  regards to family goals, ethics and religion.
  • Make the best possible adjustment to the presence of an inherited  condition within a family member or self.
  • Seek appropriate medical and educational care.
