COLORADO – July 2025 – This July, Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers (RMCC) is observing Sarcoma Awareness Month, an important time dedicated to increasing understanding of this rare and often complex group of cancers. Sarcomas originate in the bone and soft tissues of the body, including muscle, fat, nerves, fibrous tissue, and blood vessels.
While the exact causes of most sarcomas remain unknown, certain genetic conditions and prior radiation therapy can increase the risk of developing these tumors. Given their rarity and diverse subtypes, an accurate diagnosis and specialized treatment approach are crucial for patients.
"Sarcoma is a challenging cancer, not only due to its rarity but also because of its many different forms," says Travis Archuleta, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist at RMCC. "Our physician oncologists possess specialized expertise in diagnosing and treating these diverse subtypes. We emphasize a truly multidisciplinary approach, working closely with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists to ensure each patient receives a comprehensive and highly tailored treatment plan. This collaborative effort is essential for achieving the best possible outcomes for sarcoma patients across Colorado."
RMCC is uniquely positioned to offer patients access to advanced diagnostic tools, innovative therapies, and clinical trials specifically for sarcoma, providing cutting-edge care conveniently close to home.
"Facing a sarcoma diagnosis can be incredibly daunting, and our goal at RMCC is to provide not just world-class medical treatment, but also comprehensive support," adds Eiko Browning, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist at RMCC. "We are deeply committed to connecting patients and survivors with valuable resources, support groups, and survivorship programs. It's about empowering them to navigate their journey with confidence and ensuring they have every possible tool to face this challenge."
Throughout Sarcoma Awareness Month, RMCC encourages the community to learn more about this rare cancer and support those affected.
