Spotlighting Men’s Health Month: Early Detection of Prostate Cancer

3 min read

COLORADO – June 2025 – Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers (RMCC) reaffirms the critical importance of Men’s Health Awareness Month every June, particularly in the fight against prostate cancer. RMCC urges men across Colorado to prioritize their health and understand the significant benefits of early detection.

Prostate cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, making proactive screening a vital tool for successful outcomes. When detected early, prostate cancer is highly treatable, boasting a remarkable 5-year survival rate of nearly 100 percent for localized cases.

“Men's Health Awareness Month serves as a crucial reminder for men to be proactive about their health, especially when it comes to prostate cancer," said Manojkumar Bupathi, MD, MS, president and medical oncologist at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. "The absence of early symptoms means that waiting for signs can unfortunately lead to a more advanced diagnosis. Our message is clear: don't wait. Early detection truly saves lives and allows for the most effective treatment options."

While all men are at risk for prostate cancer, certain factors significantly increase that risk. These include age (with risk increasing rapidly after 50 and about 60 percent of cases diagnosed in men 65 or older), race, family history, and lifestyle. For example, African American men have a higher incidence of prostate cancer and are more likely to develop it at an earlier age compared to men of other racial backgrounds.

"Understanding your risk factors is the first step in taking charge of your health," added Travis Archuleta, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. "For instance, if you have a father or brother who was diagnosed with prostate cancer, your risk more than doubles. These statistics highlight the need for personalized conversations with your doctor about screening, especially for those with elevated risk."

RMCC is committed to providing comprehensive and personalized care through its team of specialized medical oncologists. Leveraging advanced diagnostic tools, such as MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsies for accurate detection and staging, RMCC offers a wide range of tailored treatment options including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.

As a proud member of The US Oncology Network, RMCC is at the forefront of cancer care, providing patients with access to cutting-edge treatments and extensive clinical trial programs. This affiliation ensures that patients in Colorado have access to promising new therapies and treatment approaches that might not be available elsewhere, bringing the latest advancements in prostate cancer treatment directly to the community.

RMCC strongly encourages all men over 40, or those with a family history of prostate cancer or other higher risk factors, to speak to their primary care provider about prostate cancer screening. A simple conversation can lead to life-saving early detection.
