Summer Sun Safety Month: RMCC Stresses Skin Cancer Prevention

3 min read

COLORADO – August 2025With August officially designated as Summer Sun Safety Month, Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers (RMCC) is raising awareness about the dangers of excessive sun exposure and the crucial importance of protecting your skin. As Coloradans enjoy the final weeks of summer activities, RMCC reminds everyone that prioritizing sun safety is paramount for long-term health.

Prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to significant health risks, including sunburn, premature skin aging, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States, with a staggering 1 in 5 Americans developing it by the age of 70.

"Many people don’t realize how quickly sun damage can accumulate," said Dr. Travis Archuleta, a medical oncologist and hematologist at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. "Even a few bad sunburns can significantly increase your risk of melanoma later in life. We want to empower people with the knowledge to protect themselves, so they can enjoy the outdoors safely."

Dr. Archuleta added, "The good news is that skin cancer is largely preventable. Simple steps like seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and using broad-spectrum sunscreen can make a huge difference in reducing your risk."

This month serves as a powerful reminder that while summer fun is essential, proactive skin protection is the best way to safeguard your health. RMCC is committed to helping patients understand the risks and take preventative measures.

"We see firsthand the impact of skin cancer on our patients and their families," said Dr. Eiko Browning, a medical oncologist and hematologist at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. "Summer Sun Safety Month is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the message that prevention is key. Regular skin checks are also incredibly important, and we encourage everyone to be vigilant about any changes they notice on their skin."

Dr. Browning continued, "Early detection of skin cancer can lead to much better outcomes. By being proactive and taking sun safety seriously, you're not just protecting your skin—you're investing in your future health."
