What to Expect After a GI Cancer Diagnosis
Being diagnosed with a gastrointestinal (GI) cancer can feel overwhelming. You may have questions about your diagnosis, treatment options, and what comes next. At Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers (RMCC), our GI cancer specialists are here to help you understand your diagnosis and guide you through every step of your treatment journey.
Whether you have been diagnosed with colorectal, pancreatic, stomach, esophageal, or another gastrointestinal cancer, our team will work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your unique needs.
Your First Appointment with the GI Oncologist
Your first visit with an RMCC oncologist is an opportunity to learn more about your diagnosis and discuss treatment options. During this appointment, your GI cancer doctor may:
- Review your medical history and test results
- Discuss the type and stage of your cancer
- Explain additional testing that may be needed to understand the extent of cancer, as well as biomarkers that can guide treatment selections
- Outline the next steps for your treatment
- Answer your questions and concerns
Consider bringing a family member or trusted friend to help take notes and provide support.
Questions to Ask Your GI Cancer Care Team
Some of the questions will likely be answered during your diagnosis and treatment recommendations, but you may want to have a list of questions available, such as these, in case you forget on the day of the appointment.
- What type of GI cancer do I have?
- Has my cancer spread?
- What additional testing do I need?
- What treatment options are available?
- What is the goal of the treatment (e.g., to cure the cancer, shrink it, or manage symptoms)?
- Are clinical trials available for my diagnosis?
- What side effects should I plan for?
- What support services are available to my family and me through RMCC?
